Centrifugal barrel machines feature a central turret containing four hexagonal or octagonal barrels. As the turret spins in one direction, the barrels rotate in the opposite direction at a 1:1 ratio. This planetary motion creates centrifugal forces up to 25 to 30 times gravity (G-forces). The compound forces compress the media and parts inside each barrel, forming a sliding, high-pressure friction layer. This mass removes metal burrs, blends parting lines, and creates a polished finish.
Achieving a high-quality finish depends on the right mix of parts, media, and fluid compounds. The media-to-part ratio typically ranges from 3:1 to 5:1. Harder metals like stainless steel require ceramic media, while softer metals like aluminum or zinc alloy casting components yield better results with plastic, porcelain, or walnut shells. Adding specialty lubricating compounds prevents oxidation, suspends fine metal particles, and keeps the media clean for consistent abrasive contact.
